Engineering the Complex SOC The first unified hardware/software guide to processor-centric SOC design Processor-centric approaches enable SOC designers to complete far larger projects in far less time. Engineering the Complex SOCis a comprehensive, example-driven guide to creating designs with configurable, extensible processors. Drawing upon Tensilica’s Xtensa architecture and TIE language, Dr. Chris Rowen systematically illuminates the issues, opportunities, and challenges of processor-centric design. Rowen introduces a radically new design methodology, then covers its essential techniques: processor configuration, extension, hardware/software co-generation, multiple processor partitioning/communication, and more. Coverage includes: * Why extensible processors are necessary: shortcomings of current design methods * Comparing extensible processors to traditional processors and hardwired logic * Extensible processor architecture and mechanisms of processor extensibility * Latency, throughput, coordination of parallel functions, hardware interconnect options, management of design complexity, and other issues * Multiple-processor SOC architecture for embedded systems * Task design from the viewpoints of software andhardware developers * Advanced techniques: implementing complex state machines, task-to-task synchronization, power optimization, and more * Toward a “sea of processors”: Long-term trends in SOC design and semiconductor technology For all architects, hardware engineers, software designers, and SOC program managers involved with complex SOC design; and for all managers investing in SOC designs, platforms, processors, or expertise.

This volume serves as a timely, practical introduction to the principles of nanotribology and nanomechanics and applications to magnetic storage systems, MEMS/NEMS and BioMEMS/bioNEMS. Assuming some familiarity with macrotribology/mechanics, the book comprises chapters by internationally recognized experts, who integrate knowledge of the field from the mechanics and materials-science perspectives. They cover key measurement techniques, their applications, and theoretical modelling of interfaces, each beginning their contributions with macro- and progressing to microconcepts. After reviewing the fundamental experimental and theoretical aspects in the first part, Nanotribology and Nanomechanics then treats applications. Three groups of readers are likely to find this text valuable: graduate students, research workers, and practicing engineers. It can serve as the basis for a comprehensive, one- or two-semester course in scanning probe microscopy; applied scanning probe techniques; or nanotribology/nanomechanics/nanotechnology, in departments such as mechanical engineering, materials science, and applied physics. This second, revised edition is substantially enlarged by three new chapters: One new chapter introduces to the theory, physics and characterization of the Lotus-Effect. Other new chapters discuss the attaching properties of hairs as realized at gecko feet and present a comprehensive review of structural, mechanical, and tribological properties of various hair and skin as a function of ethnicity, damage, conditioning treatment, and various environments. With a Foreword by Physics Nobel Laureate Gerd Binnig.

This new book is about multicomponent flow modeling and analysis. Multicomponent reactive flow arises in various engineering applications such as combustion, crystal growth, atmospheric reentry, and chemical reactors. The purpose of this book is first to give a detailed presentation of the governing equations–including the expression of multicomponent transport coefficients–obtained from the kinetic theory of gases. We also discuss symmetric formulations of the governing equations–which are important from a theoretical and a numerical point of view–and we investigate equilibrium flows. A second purpose is to analyse the mathematical properties of the model. More specifically, to investigate thermochemistry properties and the structure of multicoomponent transport. Finally, the book discusses the numerical simulation of multicomponent reactive flows and discusses the problems associated with multiple time scales and multiple space scales and we present complex chemistry flame simulations. The new aspects are the structure of multicomponent transport fluxes, the accurate expression of transport coefficients, the rigorous mathematical results, and the interdisciplinary aspects. The book will give a complete interdisciplinary overview of modeling science and will be of interest to engineers, mathematicians, numericists and scientists.

Many of the concepts that I discuss in this book are related and naturally flow together. Reading about one particular modification path may encourage you to read futher about other areas of modification. This book is nonetheless a reference manual designed to guide you to useful information on specific areas of car modification. Feel free to skip ahead and jump around from chapter to chapter. There’s no test at the end of this book, so have fun with it! Although many of the concepts discussed in this book apply to most cars, this book most directly speaks to the owner of a late model “sport compact” car such as a Honda Civic or a Ford Focus. But this book is also useful if you own a truck or SUV. Although the manufacturers used to illustrate performance products may differ, the core technology and engineering concepts apply universally.

Hi there, and welcome to BlackBerry For Dummies. If you already have a BlackBerry, this is a great book to have around if you want to discover new features or you need something to slap open and use as a quick reference. If you don’t have a BlackBerry yet (but plan to get one) and have some basic questions (like “What is a BlackBerry?” or “How can a BlackBerry help me be more productive?”), you can benefit by reading this book cover to cover. No matter what your current BlackBerry User Status is — BUS, for short — we’re here to help you get the most out of your BlackBerry. We can tell you, right off the bat, that a BlackBerry is not a fruit you find at the supermarket but rather is a) an always-connected handheld device that b) has e-mail capabilities with an Internet browser built in. With your BlackBerry, you are in the privileged position of always being able to receive e-mail and browse the World Wide Web. On top of that, a BlackBerry has all the features you’d expect from a personal organizer, including a calendar, to-do lists, and memos. Oh, and did we mention that a BlackBerry also has a mobile phone built in? Talk about multitasking! Imagine being stuck on a commuter train: With your BlackBerry by your side, you can compose e-mail while conducting a conference call — all from the comfort of your seat. In this book, we show you all the basics but then go the extra mile by highlighting some of the lesser-known (but still really handy) features of the BlackBerry. Your BlackBerry can work hard for you when you need it as well as play hard when you want it to. (Need we say that we’re ready, willing, and able to show you where to get great games for your BlackBerry?)
