Welcome to HDTV For Dummies. HDTV is the hottest technology to hit your local electronics store since the advent of cell phones. HDTVs are getting bigger, better, cheaper, more sophisticated, and more useful every day. Since you’ve bought this book, we figure that not only do you agree with us, you’re already part of the HDTV movement. To arms, Comrade! One of the most appealing things about the current crop of HDTVs is the ease with which you can set up an HDTV-powered home theater, including surround sound and an awesome picture. However, the rapidly dropping price of HDTVs might be the most attractive aspect of all — we’ve reached a point in time where you don’t have to be rich to consider an HDTV for the bedroom, too! Figuring out which HDTV to buy can be confusing, as there are all sorts of technologies, sizes, standards, etc. And then, once you’ve decided on what to buy, making sure it will work with all your other gear — your DVD, camcorder, VCR, set-top box, and so on — can be even more confusing. That’s where this book comes in handy. Our aim is to make sure you get the most bang for your buck (or franc, or peso, or whatever — even euros!). If you’re thinking of purchasing an HDTV and installing it in your home, this is the book for you. Even if you’ve already purchased the HDTV itself, this book will help you install and configure the HDTV. What’s more, this book helps you get the most out of your investment after it’s up and running. With this book in hand, you’ll have all the information that you need to know about the following topics:
- Planning your HDTV system, including all sorts of accessories
- Evaluating and selecting the right HDTV for your home
- Installing and configuring the HDTV equipment in your home
- Hooking up your HDTV to the right high-definition programming sources
- Adding A/V entertainment gear and accessories to your HDTV
- Playing video games on your Xbox, in high-def splendor
- Accessing your HDTV from around the house over a home network
- Enhancing your HDTV environment so you can have your own HDTV theater

Roxio Easy Media Creator For Dummies is meant to be a simple reference to the major components and features that its many components offer. I have, however, endeavored as much as possible to arrange this reference material according to the task you want to get done rather than according to the module that you use in performing it (as you sometimes use the same module to accomplish multiple tasks). This means that although the chapters in each part are laid in a logical order, each stands on its own, ready for you to dig into the information at any point. Whenever I could, I have also tried to make the topics within each chapter stand on their own as well. When there’s just no way around relying upon some information that’s discussed elsewhere, I include a cross-reference that gives you the chapter and verse (actually the chapter and section) for where you can find that related information if you’re of a mind to. Use the Contents at a Glance along with the full Table of Contents and Index to look up the topic of the hour and find out exactly where it is in this compilation of Easy Media Creator information. You’ll find that although most topics are introduced in a conversational manner, I don’t waste much time cutting to the chase by laying down the main principles at work (usually in bulleted form) followed by the hard reality of how you do the deed (as numbered steps).

The good news is that programs included in Roxio Creator 8 are genuinely easy to use. The bad news, if there is any, is that because of its nature as a collection or suite of different applications and tools, you may initially find it a bit confusing as to which part to turn to get a particular job done. This is where Roxio Creator 8 For Dummies comes in. This book is designed to make you familiar with Roxio Creator’s many capabilities and get you up and running and comfortable with its many features as quickly as possible. If I had to choose just one word to characterize Roxio Creator 8, it would have to be versatility because this baby can do almost anything you might want to do Roxio Creator, you can go from capturing original digital media to editing it and then using it in a wide array of different projects that you can then output to disc in a very short time. Because the program’s emphasis is always on making these processes as easy as can be, you don’t have to worry if you don’t have any background in working with digital media and have limited or even no experience with multimedia editing and design. I just hope that you find using Roxio Creator 8 to design, build, and burn your own media projects half as much fun I found writing about them in this book. I want to congratulate the Roxio/Sonic engineers for providing all of us with a truly outstanding set of tools with which to transform the sounds and images of the world around us into memories that we can share with friends and family alike.

p o k e r has always been America’s game, but poker is changing these days. In a big way. Ask a friend or neighbor with only a casual knowledge of the game to offer an image of poker, and one of three pictures is likely to appear: Poker is a game played by Mississippi riverboat gamblers with pencil-fhin moustaches, fast hands, and a derringer hidden up their ruffled sleeves, or it’s played by gunfighters of the Old West (men like Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson). Welcome to Dodge City, pardner. Check your guns at the marshal’s office and pull up a chair. Another picture of poker comes right out of the movie, The Sting. Imagine 1930s Chicago mobsters, a round table, a low-hanging lamp illuminating the thick cigar smoke rising from the ash tray, guys with shoulder holsters and snub-nosed 38s, a bottle of cheap Scotch on the table, and someone the size of an NFL linebacker stationed by the peep-hole at the door. There’s a kinder, gentler version too. This is a picture of Uncle Jack and Aunt Gertie playing poker around the kitchen table for pennies, and somehow all the nieces and nephews always come away winners. Poker has been all of these things, and more. Although your authors are far too young to have gambled with Doc Holliday or played cards with Al Capone, both are familiar with the kitchen table introduction to America’s national card game. Since the late 1980s, poker has undergone a renaissance, a greening, if you please. Today’s poker is clean, light, and airy, and decidedly middle class. Like bowling and billiards before it, poker has moved out from under the seedier side of its roots and is flowering in the sunshine. No matter where you live, you probably live within a few hours drive of a public card casino. Poker is all around you. Seek and ye shall find, and these days you don’t have to look very far either.

As computers have gotten more powerful, they’ve become the standard tools for recording, editing, and mixing audio. More and more professional studios are using them because of their power — and more and more amateurs are using them because they’re also relatively inexpensive and easy to use. For many people — especially any technophobic musicians out there (you know who you are) — the thought of recording on a computer is daunting. You have to deal with hardware issue (what kind of computer do I get?) and software issue (how do I work this #@*% thing?). Add to this the sometimescomplicated workings of the non-audio computer software and you get a deer-in-the-headlights look from otherwise intelligent, articulate people. Well, I hear ya. I don’t consider myself a techy (although I fear I might be turning into one), and getting up-to-speed when it came to recording into a computer left me scratching my head a few times. Luckily for you, I’ve stopped scratching my head and have managed to make some semblance of sense out of the whole thing.

You have in your possession a reference tool, not a guidebook that you have to read from cover to cover. Open up this book to any chapter to find the answers on how to make your European travel dreams come true. You can read Europe For Dummies from start to finish if you want, but if you’re already familiar with some aspects of international travel, for instance, skip over the first two parts and jump right into the destination descriptions. This is a selective guidebook to Europe. My goal throughout is to give you a really good selection of each country’s highlights. That means I exclude places that other, more exhaustive guidebooks routinely include. Brussels, Copenhagen, and Lisbon are important cities, but from the perspective of the first-time visitor to Europe, they can’t compete with London, Paris, and Madrid. In addition, so much is really worth seeing in Europe that you don’t need to waste your time with the second-rate, the overrated, or the boring. Please be advised that travel information is subject to change at any time — and this is especially true of prices. I, therefore, suggest that you write or call ahead for confirmation when making your travel plans. The authors, editors, and publisher cannot be held responsible for the experiences of readers while traveling. Your safety is important to us, however, so we encourage you to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Keep a close eye on cameras, purses, and wallets, all favorite targets of thieves and pickpockets.

I’ve written this book so that you, too, can learn to take advantage of the megastore that is eBay. This book shows you how to get the bargains and stay safe in every major category of merchandise eBay offers. Keep this book in your hands to help you feel at ease at eBay. I’d like to call it eBay For Dummies Light, but my publisher won’t let me mess with the trademark. And really, it’s not an accurate name. This book is just as packed with information as my larger For Dummies books, eBay For Dummies, 3rd Edition, and Starting an eBay Business For Dummies. The information in this book is simply targeted toward your interest in hunting for bargains. There are great bargains to find, and down the road there’s always the chance for you to sell some of the knick knacks that are collecting dust in your own closet. But the goal of this book is to help you reach your comfort zone to buy the things you want and need in your life, without dragging yourself all over town or spending wads of cash. In this book, you’ll find out:
- How the eBay megastore (Web site) is laid out
- How to browse for your item by category and theme
- How to set up the search engine to sniff out the best deals
- What to look for when shopping for a particular item
- How to stay safe and protect your hard-earned money
