Synthesis and application of nanoparticles have been often reported by researchers in material science, chemistry and physics. While nanoparticles themselves are well known to exhibit fascinating characteristics. interest in their improvement and promotion is now turning to the hybridization of organic and/or inorganic nano-materials. Although nano-level hybridization is an outstandingly novel and original technique, it encounters many difficulties to achieving the desired industrial application. To thoroughly review the research in this field, this book focuses on the synthesis, characterization and process of nano-hybrid materials, including nanoparticles and ultra-thin films. It elucidates the fundamental aspects of nano-hybrid materials in the synthesis procedure, characterization, and processes with selected examples, from both the basic science and the engineering appications points of view. In fact, this is the first comprehensive compilation of new advances that covers the current status and topics of new synthetic information of nano-hybrid materials composed of organic and/or inorganic materials at the nano-meter level, in one volume. As such, the book provides a unique source of information and guidance for specialists and non-specialists alike.

This book offers a fundamental and comprehensive overview of nanomedicine from a systems engineering perspective, making it the first book in the field of quantitative nanomedicine based on systems theory. It will advance knowledge of nanoscale science and engineering by efficiently employing quantitative tools for fundamental biomedical engineering and biological science research. The book starts by introducing the concept of nanomedicine, and provides basic mathematical modeling techniques that can be used to model nanoscale biomedical and biological systems. It then demonstrates how this idea can be used to model and analyze the central dogma of molecular biology, tumor growth, and the immune system. Broad applications of the idea are further illustrated by Bayesian networks, multiscale and multiparadigm modeling, and AFM engineering. This book demonstrates how systems engineering, which has been very successful in conventional engineering, may help with nanomedicine.

Developments in nanoscience, biotechnology and photonics are on the verge of offering great opportunities for the exploration of optical interactions at the nanoscale. Today, there is an ever-increasing need for optical imaging tools that are able to resolve features at the length-scales relevant for biological cells, molecules, and complexes, as well as for the rapidly developing class of materials known as nanostructures. Addressing this need, this groundbreaking book serves as a one-stop review of modern nano-optical and nano-imaging techniques, applications, and developments. It focuses on near-field microscopy which has opened up optical processes at the nanoscale for direct inspection. This frontline resource helps researchers and engineers achieve high resolution optical imaging of biological species and functional materials. The book also offers detailed coverage of the imaging of optical device operation and new nanophotonics functionalities.

The main intention of the editors of the book is the demonstration of the intrinsic correlation and mutual influence of three important components of nanoscience: new phenomena – nanomaterials – nanodevices. This is the organizing concept of the book. To discover new phenomena it is necessary to develop novel nanotechnological processes for fabrication of nanomaterials. Nanostructures and new phenomena serve as the base for the development of novel nanoelectronic devices and systems. The articles selected for the book illustrate this interrelation.

An important and exciting aspect in the newly developing field of nanomedicine is the use of nanoparticle drug delivery systems allowing for innovative therapeutic approaches. Due to their small size, these drug delivery systems are promising tools in therapeutic approaches such as selective or targeted drug delivery towards a specific tissue or organ, enhanced drug transport across biological barriers, and intracellular drug delivery. This timely book provides an overview of possible therapeutic applications. The first part of the book highlights general properties of and phenomena observed with nanoparticles, and the subsequent consequences for applications in drug delivery. The second part focuses on the therapeutic approaches that are possible through the use of nanoparticles, with each chapter discussing a specific disease (e.g. diabetes, cancer, inflammation, etc.) and the relevant therapeutic approaches based on the design of nanoparticulate drug delivery systems. Written in a concise manner, readers will gain an insight into the basics of nanoparticle preparation as well as a more detailed account of what is therapeutically feasible by using nanoparticle approaches.
Contents: General Aspects of Nanotherapeutics: Nanocarriers in Drug Delivery – Design, Manufacture and Physicochemical Properties (C Schmidt & A Lamprecht); Transport Across Biological Barriers (N Nafee et al.); Targeting Approaches (S Cammas-Marion); Disease-Related Approaches by Nanotherapeutics: Nanoscale Cancer Therapeutics (Y Pellequer & A Lamprecht); Nanotherapeutics for Skin Diseases (N Atrux-Tallau et al.); Nanoparticles for Oral Vaccination (J M Irache et al.); Nanoparticles: Therapeutic Approaches for Bacterial Diseases (B Moulari); Nanoparticle Therapy in Parasites Diseases: Possibility and Reality! (M Larabi); Nanocarriers in the Therapy of Inflammatory Disease (A Lamprecht).

This volume serves as a timely, practical introduction to the principles of nanotribology and nanomechanics and applications to magnetic storage systems, MEMS/NEMS and BioMEMS/bioNEMS. Assuming some familiarity with macrotribology/mechanics, the book comprises chapters by internationally recognized experts, who integrate knowledge of the field from the mechanics and materials-science perspectives. They cover key measurement techniques, their applications, and theoretical modelling of interfaces, each beginning their contributions with macro- and progressing to microconcepts. After reviewing the fundamental experimental and theoretical aspects in the first part, Nanotribology and Nanomechanics then treats applications. Three groups of readers are likely to find this text valuable: graduate students, research workers, and practicing engineers. It can serve as the basis for a comprehensive, one- or two-semester course in scanning probe microscopy; applied scanning probe techniques; or nanotribology/nanomechanics/nanotechnology, in departments such as mechanical engineering, materials science, and applied physics. This second, revised edition is substantially enlarged by three new chapters: One new chapter introduces to the theory, physics and characterization of the Lotus-Effect. Other new chapters discuss the attaching properties of hairs as realized at gecko feet and present a comprehensive review of structural, mechanical, and tribological properties of various hair and skin as a function of ethnicity, damage, conditioning treatment, and various environments. With a Foreword by Physics Nobel Laureate Gerd Binnig.
